Advanced Computing Ecosystem for Multi-Domain Operations

Prof. Raju R Namburu

Chief Technology Officer

Information Technology Laboratory

US Army Engineering Research and Development Center (ERDC)

Advanced computing ecosystem at the edge will allow rapid, decisive action on the emerging multi- domain operations with multi-faceted internet of battlefield things, data analytics, multi-level networking, and integrated software defined technologies. Now, and even more so in the future the battlespace is characterized by highly distributed processing, heterogeneous and mobile assets with limited power, communications dominated but restricted network capacity, and operating with time-critical needs in a rapidly changing hostile environment.   The fundamental challenge here is how to gain intelligence from these intermittently connected advanced computing ecosystems under hostile environment in real-time to win the battle.    In this talk I will discuss some of our recent activities related to this topic and highlight related research directions.

Dr. Namburu leads the development of the Information Technology Laboratory’s (ITL) computational sciences and engineering.  Dr. Raju Namburu represents DoD as a member of the US National Science and Technology Council (NSTC) subcommittee for the future advanced computing echo system.  Prior to coming to ITL, Dr. Namburu was Chief Scientist (CS), Division Chief -Computational Sciences Division, and Director-DoD Supercomputing Resource Center Director at the Computational and Information Sciences Directorate (CISD), U.S. Army Research Laboratory (ARL).  Dr. Namburu was the chief architect in developing the computational sciences campaign strategy for the U.S. Army.  As program manager, Dr. Namburu directed and guided one of the Army's premier computational sciences multi-University Consortium, Army High-Performance Computing Research Center (AHPCRC) led by Stanford University (2006-2016) and at the University of Minnesota (2000-2006) for the Department of the Army.   Dr. Namburu is the working group lead for information systems technology under DoD C4I community of interest and is actively involved in developing various activities for DoD in edge computing ecosystem, High-performance computing, DoD AI strategy, and quantum sciences.  Dr. Namburu led various DoD scalable software development projects in computational sciences including establishing DoD mobile network modeling institute.

Dr. Namburu obtained his Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from University of Minnesota.  During his career, Dr. Namburu has worked at IBM Almaden research lab, Cray Research, and various US Army research, development, and engineering labs.   Dr. Namburu has more than 100 refereed publications in journals and in international conferences and symposiums. Dr. Namburu is a Fellow of American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME).
